INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this task is to develop a working knowledge of nursing theory, nursing ethics, and professional accountability and apply these concepts to your professional clinical practice. You will be required to think about real-life scenarios and how they relate to nursing codes in your professional practice.

Part A: Florence Nightingale's Environmental Theory
One nursing theory that has vastly influenced my values and goals is the environmental Theory by Florence Nightingale. The Theory describes how nurses should utilize the patient's environment to aid recovery and wellness. According to the Theory, the nurse takes the noble initiative of configuring a patient's surroundings to restore their health gradually (Gilbert, 2020). It takes on the idea that all the external factors that influence a patient's surroundings in one way or the other carry the potential to affect the patient's physiologic and biological processes.
Excellent Nursing Practices
In understanding the influence of a patient's environment on their health and recovery, a nurse is expected to apply the Theory to implement excellent nursing practices diligently. Nurses apply this Theory by ensuring that all the Theory's sub-concepts are met. For instance, nurses ensure adequate ventilation and warming in the patient's room. The Theory suggests that nurses ensure the patient's air is fresh and pure, just like the air outside the building, without making the patient cold (Gilbert, 2020). Another sub-concept of the Theory that allows nurses to implement excellent nursing services is ensuring that the patient has access to natural light. Nurses also ensure that the patients are kept away from noise and disturbance, have their beddings changed or aired frequently, have nutritious small frequent meals, and are often and consistently given words of hope to cheer them up (Sher & Akhtar, 2018). By observing these practices, nurses can be fruitful in their endeavor to help the patient recover faster.
How the Theory fits My Professional Practice
The Theory fits my professional practice in that it addresses the nurse's role in putting the patient in the best condition to fasten their health and achieve their health goals. The Theory makes several assumptions that elaborate 'on nursing' as a profession and its role in the patient's health. One of these is that nursing is a calling, where a nurse must be motivated enough, know what to expect in their line of duty, and take all challenges in high spirits. Another assumption is that excellent nursing practices are achieved and attained by altering the patient's environment for their own good (Sher & Akhtar, 2018). The Theory fits into the professional nursing practice by urging nurses to meet all sub-concepts, such as fresh air, adequate lighting, quiet, and a nutritious diet for the patient.
Part B: Historical Nursing Figures in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries
Several historical nursing figures are known for their great works in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Two of them inspire me in my professional nursing practice: Florence Nightingale and Mary Breckinridge. Florence Nightingale is widely known as the founder of modern nursing of her concepts to optimize the patient's environment. According to Dye (2018), Mary Breckinridge is widely known for her dedication to promoting maternal and child health, which saw a significant decline in the maternal mortality rate in rural areas of the United States (US).
Differences in Contributions
There are major differences in contributions between Florence nightingale and Mary Breckinridge. While Nightingale defined nursing as caring for the patient through their environment, Breckinridge defined nursing as pure devotion and compassion towards those in need. Nightingale advocated for a clean environment for the patient, with adequate lighting, fresh air, quiet and serenity, nutritious meals, warmth, and hope (Glasper, 2020). She suggested that these concepts would help patients recover faster and, consequently, their health goals. On the other hand, Breckinridge went through rough terrains on horseback to the rural areas to offer her nursing knowledge and expertise to mothers and their children who could not access healthcare. Both their contributions have wowed the concept of 'nursing' today and provided a baseline for what 'nursing' as an act of service should be like.
Influence of their Contributions to my Professional Practice
Through the noble work of the two historical nursing figures discussed above, I am inspired to display and portray the same level of devotion and excellence. As a professional nurse, I am reminded that nursing is a calling. It does not come to a halt with one major challenge or setback; rather, it is a lifetime act of service. Secondly, I am reminded that nurses should demonstrate a high level of compassion and dedication to improving their patients' lives. A nurse must be willing to step out, go the extra mile to seek knowledge, and apply it to their patients with their best interest at heart.
Part C: State Board of Nursing (BON) versus ANA
BON is a regulatory body that takes control of nursing licensing requirements for each state. On the other hand, ANA is a national organization that includes all nurses and represents their interests. Membership in ANA is not a mandatory requirement for nurse licensure. BON is actively involved in evaluating applications for nurse licenses, issuing them, renewing them, and taking disciplinary actions following misconduct at a professional level (Nurse Journal, 2023). On the other hand, ANA functions to advance and advocate for the nursing profession by setting standards for nurses, promoting ethical standards and safety, and presenting issues or concerns that affect patients and nurses (ANA, 2014). Therefore, BON exclusively oversees nurse licensing at the state level, while ANA is a more influential voice for all nurses and lacks the licensing authority given to BON.
Roles of BON and ANA
BON has four major roles. One of these is evaluating applications for licenses presented to the board by aspiring nurses. They do this to make sure that the nurse applicant has achieved the necessary education, passed the NCLEX-RN examination, and has all background checks completed and clean (Nurse Journal, 2023). Secondly, they issue and renew nurse licenses. Once they issue the licenses, they ensure they secure a list of all licensed professional nurses available to the public. For the board to renew licenses, a nurse must actively pursue continuous professional education and have a clean record (Nurse Journal, 2023). Finally, the board takes disciplinary measures against nurses who go against the set regulations and laws.
ANA has several roles aimed at advancing the profession and ensuring that all nurses have a voice. One of their roles includes setting a high practice standard that all nurses assume and translates to effective and better patient care (ANA, 2014). Secondly, they ensure that nurses work in a safe and ethical environment. Thirdly, they advocate for the health of all nurses, identifying all issues that can affect them and their patients (ANA, 2014). ANA is devoted to helping all nurses achieve their maximum potential in their profession.
Influence of the Organizations on my Nursing Practice
The organizations pass laws and regulations that directly impact my nursing practice. The regulations, such as having certain professional development points to be granted license renewal, instill competence and dedication to my practice. The organizations' standards guide my nursing practice and help form a seamless professional relationship with other nurses.
Requirements for Professional License Renewal in Virginia
Nurses are required to renew their licenses every two years. Online renewal requires either their personal identification number (PIN) or username and password. Continued competency requirement includes completion of one out of several courses or learning activities. These include courses approved by the board, completion of evidence-based research studies or projects, fifteen contact hours of seminars, conferences, or workshops, and 640 hours of active nursing practice or thirty contact hours of seminars, conferences, and workshops (VDHP, 2023). Original documentation of the continued competency activities should be provided during license renewal.
