Lagrague et al. (2020) sought to explore the impact of transformational and toxic leadership models on nurses' emotional wellbeing, job satisfaction, intent to seek a job elsewhere or leave nursing practice, and absenteeism. The researchers noted the significance of transformational leadership in creating a favorable nursing practice environment. Evidence indicates that transformational leadership potentiates various positive outcomes (e.g., organization, patient, nurse). On the contrary, toxic leadership is associated with adverse practice outcomes, psychological problems, and deteriorated health. The researchers employed a cross-sectional study design because it is time-efficient, economical, and does not need follow-up data collection. The participant includes 770 registered nurses (RNs) from fifteen healthcare facilities in Central Philippines. Different self-report scales were used to facilitate data collection between December 2019 and February 2020. Regression analyses revealed that transformational leadership of nurse managers empowered nurses and offered a positive work environment, resulting in higher job satisfaction and reduced turnover intentions. The study also indicated the significant negative impact of nurse managers' toxic leadership on nurses' wellbeing and job satisfaction (Labrague et al., 2020). These findings suggest that nurse retention models should include transformational leadership approaches and discourage toxic leadership in healthcare organizations.
