In The 21st century, several factors have converged that have radically altered the environment, education, the practice of nursing in the United States. In addition, there are also significant changes in the roles and responsibilities that nurses are required to undertake. Nurses today are required to perform more tasks in the healthcare system and these demands that they advance their education and also a transformation of how nurses are taught. Apart from this, technological advancements have also been present in every facet of the healthcare system. This has also occasioned with increased funding for nursing education as campaigns to encourage students to pursue nursing or advance their education in the field. In addition, it has transformed the methods by which treatment is provided in the system evoked the need to promote continuity y in treatment and development of better payment methods, for example, by improving the Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs).
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 will occasion several changes in healthcare especially amongst nurses. There is an expected shift towards preventive care as more individuals will access insurance to pay for primary care, in addition, there is expected to be a shift that places more emphasis on care that is community based. The nurse is expected to be well endowed to community based preventive care and services. Due to the increased funding, resources necessary for care in clinics, offices, and community-based centers will be increased over the years (American Academy of Nursing, 2010).
There will be a development of the Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). These will be implemented with the aim of focusing on providing comprehensive care through the entire period of illness. The ACOs are expected to include offices of physicians, clinics, acute care hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and home health agencies. Health care services provided would put together and be paid depending in relation to the period of care and not according to the services provided individually. Nurses would be key players in the coordination care (American Academy of Nursing, 2010).
Nursing education will include leadership skills and critical thinking as nurses are expected develop skills in leadership and creative and critical thinking as they will be expected to participate in analyzing and evaluating the current health care systems and processes involved in the system. The nurses will be empowered to advocate for better, safer patient care, and functioning of the system at all levels of practice. Because of this, it is expected that a large number should be going back to school to advance their education. This will add on to the number of newly enrolled students undertaking nursing (Healthcare Association of New York State, 2013).
