Evolving Practice of Nursing and Patient Care Delivery Models
The future of nursing shall welcome health practices that shall totally revolutionize the current ways of health service provisions. According to Wilson, Whitaker and Whitford (2012), nurses make up to 80% of the total number of medical team members, and shall experience first-hand effects of changes across the health continuum. The roles of nurses, place and method of practice are all expected to change in the future. Today, nurses are finding new roles in the community set up, advancement in technological tools used for healthcare, and use of research-based health care plans in the usual practice. The health reforms shall involve use of technology in nursing care and introduction of more patient centered but cheap and efficient ways of nursing care, as shown here.
Use of technology in health care
The advancement in technology has rendered most professional practices in nursing care to be electronic such blood work, x-rays, test results and medical prescription (Tiffin, 2012). This has also seen introduction of teleconferencing, cloud computing, electronic forms of medical records and mobile devices that requires nurses to be technological savvy in their practice. Nurses will have to use databases containing health information to enable them understand and combat spread of diseases within a community such as HIV/AIDS and Cholera. As noted by Tiffin (2012), nurses will have to track and develop comprehensive health information for patients, and aid in improvement of user-friendliness of the use of these technological tools and equipment.
The advancement in technology has also introduced new equipment that provide nurses with new challenges on how to use them and replicate the same to their patients. The use of robots in computer-assisted surgery will increase the time nurses spend with patients and easing complex procedures (Saver, 2006). More researches are linking several diseases to stem cells and genes. The ethical controversy of teaching patients about their medical conditions and use of sophisticated equipment such as robots provide an opportunity for nurses to seek more knowledge and training on how to approach these issues (Saver, 2006). This is essentially important since nurses will be required to teach and monitor patients remotely using these devices, so the knowledge of their use is imperative.
Additionally, communication apps such as text-apps are increasingly becoming useful in aiding nurses respond to patients’ needs and offer timely treatments (Hussung, 2016). These tools aid in efficient service provision and consequently quality management in nursing practice. The rise in technology requires nurses to be involved in decision making encompassing acquisition of mobile and portable technology, use of telemedicine in remote areas, and health records. This shall require nurses to work with the community, use technology more in nursing care, record and secure patients data for future use.
Changes in delivery of care
The need to provide patient-centered care will see increasing use of nurse-managed clinics, retail clinics, mobile clinics, and "ambulatory surgery centers"; which involves provision of patient care outside the hospital environment (Hussung, 2016). This means many nurses will find jobs in the nursing homes, home health and ambulatory care, which requires them to develop new approach to nursing care in the community set up. Nurses will be required to employ sound therapeutic approach to understand and listen to people from different religions, race, tribes, and gender (Tiffin, 2012). This is essential in easing service delivery and patient recovery.
The need for preventive care is on the rise due to prevalence of the population to lifestyle diseases. This require a multidisciplinary approach involving health insurers, the medical team, health experts and media in educating the public concerning these trends so as to reduce medical costs and disease frequency (Hussung, 2016). This shall require nurses to collaborate with nutritionists, psychologists and physical therapists in care delivery. The nursing practice shall also see changes th...
