Kinetics and Kinematics in Golf Your Name Subject and Section Professor’s Name Date Introduction Kinematics and kinetics are essential concepts in biomechanics to describe and evaluate movements during golf. Kinematics deals with movement and velocity—how something is moving. This includes the temporal-spatial pattern of movements and determining variables such as the distance moved, velocity, and acceleration. On the other hand, kinetics studies the forces caused or produced by movement, such as ground reaction force, friction force, moment or torque force, and internal muscle force. In other words, whereas kinematics refers to movement in humans, kinetics seeks to establish why the movement happens or vice-versa (Burkett, 2019, p. 30). Both kinematics and kinetics can advocate human motion regarding linear and angular movements. Linear movement involves a straight path, while angular motion moves along a circular or rotating path. In sports, most movements share a combination of linear and angular components, and the angular motion is usually more dominant than the linear motion because of the swinging and rotational movement of the athlete's limbs. Knowledge of these ideas can help explain the swing mechanics from backswing to follow-through (Burkett, 2019, p. 30). Kinetics in Golf 1 Backswing In terms of movement, the backswing is angular and involves rotation around the spine. At the backswing, the moment of inertia increases as the golfer, his or her hands, and the club move away from the axis of rotation. This motion is generated by the muscles in the two areas of the body, the torso and the hips. It synchronizes to create torque, which gets the club head through its arc through the backswing, which often oscillates in an angular displacement of up to 90° to 180° depending on the type of shot and the golfer involved. The longer the radius of gyration, the larger the moment of inertia; any force to alter its state of motion is more considerable, as depicted in figure 6. 6 (Burkett, motives 2019, pp. 70-84). As stated by Nesbit & McGinnis (2014), the angular orientation of the hand through the stoke and positional orientation of the club when it is behind the head greatly influence the efficiency and effectiveness of the backswing. 2 Downswing The downswing is described by the fact that its course is accompanied by increased angular velocity in time.
