The Nursing Profession
Nursing is a profession contained in the health care circle, focused on providing care to individuals, families and the society. The care is usually given to maintaining, attain and recuperate good health to promote a quality life. Nurses are different from the other caregivers in hospital by their training, range of practice and approach to the care of patients. Most nurses are trained to provide care within the authority of clinical physicians and this traditional function has created a historical public reflection of nurses as providers of care. However, nurses are allowed by most jurisdictions to practice separately in varied settings depending on their level of training. Nurses who are advance in their training, for example, clinical nurse specialists can diagnose the condition of a patient and prescribe the necessary medications. Being a nurse is a very influential and rewarding profession. Nurses care for people through illness, injury, pain, loss, dying, grieving, birth, growth, aging and health. They not only care for people through illness, but they also promote health, prevent diseases and educate the public. We all know that nursing is a field that is concerned with helping people, yet I believe that in becoming a nurse, a person needs is more than that desire to succeed.
I believe that I belong to this field because ever since I was a child I always wanted to make a positive influence in people’s lives. I always felt the need to care for someone since I know that I have the power and the choice to do so. Growing up in Haiti has greatly influenced my desire to care for people. All throughout my life, I see all different kinds of people in poverty: infants, children, elderly people and even disabled people. Every day I see them on the streets begging others for money just so they could treat their ailing relatives. Whenever I see them, my heart is broken into pieces. I wanted to help them, yet I did not know how since I was just a child. Moving here in the States made me realize how other countries like Haiti are in great need of health care. It made me more aware of the situation and now that I am more mature, I know that I could do my part to help the situation. Becoming a nurse would help me make a positive influence in people’s lives. The other reason why I chose to become a nurse is nursing my grandmother. She was diabetic and had other illness where she needed 24-hour care, because she was hospitalized couple of times. When I would go visit her in the Hospital, I would observe how the nurses took care of my grandma who was very important to me and this inspired in me the need to pursue a career in nursing. I have realized that nursing is a very rewarding profession and I am blessed whenever I am in a position to help someone. I am very passionate about helping people and all my friends and family suggested that I should pursue a career in the medical field. Additionally, my experience working in the hospital as clinical technician inspired me and made me realize that nursing is truly for me. The feeling of helping someone in his or her greatest time of need is so rewarding. I truly believe that I am suited to become a nurse because I am honest and open to communication.
Nurses are the main communication link between the patient and the doctor. They also often interact with family members by being empathetic to their loved one’s illness. Personally, having the opportunity to influence someone everyday is very powerful. The words I use, my actions, and my attitude can help another human being to heal and that is something that I will remember all throughout my life. Nursing is one of the few careers that not only help others but it also helps you. Nursing profession is exciting, ever changing, diverse, and allows opportunity for learning something new every day. I have a year experience working in the Hosp...
