Perinatal Mental Health

Discuss at least two beliefs or other factors that are related to pediatric or perinatal mental healthcare that create barriers to mental health treatment.
The belief that pharmacological treatment used for psychiatric conditions are teratogenic may be a barrier to perinatal mental healthcare for miseducated client (Clinic Barcelona, 2022).
The belief that depression during the perinatal period is only post-partum may be a barrier to perinatal healthcare. (Clinic Barcelona, 2022).
Identify at least two specific education strategies or resources the PMHNP can provide to clients and families to address these barriers.
The PMHNP can provide the client with a drug fact sheet from the food and drug administration (FDA) or a medication fact sheet from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The PMHNP can provide literature and educated the patient over the signs and symptoms of depression. The patient should be educated that depression can occur at any point throughout the lifespan regardless of pregnancy status.
Identify one policy at either the federal, state, or local level that impacts mental health services for children and adolescents or clients in the perinatal period. Explain whether the policy supports or inhibits services.
March of 2021 the federal government introduced the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. This plan supports perinatal healthcare by extending Medicaid postpartum coverage by up to 12 months. The act will aid to address barriers of health inequities due to race and income status (Morain et al, 2022).
Describe at least two advocacy strategies the PMHNP can use to advance mental health services for children and adolescents or clients in the perinatal period. Identify other professionals the PMHNP can collaborate with to bring about change.
The PMHNP could collaborate with primary care providers to offer comprehensive screening for mental health wellness throughout the perinatal period.
The PMHNP may produce pamphlets and other mental health literature to educate women on mental health disorders throughout pregnancy. The pamphlets may be placed in areas such as the department of health and women’s health clinics.

This course has been insightful about perinatal mental health and the roles of PMHNP in addressing the issue. It demonstrates the need for emerging healthcare providers in this niche to expand their knowledge and increase their awareness of beliefs, stereotypes, and other underexamined concepts. While going through your response to the different questions, I noted that you were brief and direct. I agree that perceptions like depression are minor and pharmacological medications for addressing mental health issues lead to congenital disorders are significant hindrances to uninformed clients. Even Swami et al. (2019) flag misinformation and advocate for mental health literacy to overcome these challenges.
Your choice of resources and education options by PMHNP to address the beliefs was appropriate. Howard and Khalifeh (2020) indicate that Food and Drug Administration offers the best information regarding the appropriateness and contraindication of medications because it is the body bestowed with the responsibility of approving their use. Moreover, the authors agree that the continued empowerment of women is fundamental to ensure that they understand the complexity of perinatal mental health and the importance of seeking professional assistance as needed. They also add the importance of supportive services to assist these clients in dealing with sensitive mental health is...
