Patient compliance is the degree to which a patient's behavior complies with the advice of a clinician and aligns with the control of a healthcare professional. Notably, patient compliance is significant in reducing health difficulties, preventing hospital readmissions, and increasing patient outcomes.
Role of health care professionals in compliance and their contribution to noncompliance
The role of a healthcare professional in patient compliance is to educate and impart sufficient information to a patient about a particular treatment. However, health care professionals sometimes contribute to noncompliance. For instance, their temperaments might sometimes be rude, which pushes the patient away. Thus patients pay attention to their attitude rather than their direction. Also, poor communication and inadequate information contribute to patients' noncompliance (Diechmann, 1980)
Compliance and collaboration
Patient compliance includes how a patient follows healthcare guidance and observation from a healthcare expert about a specific treatment. The clinician is, therefore authority patients are supposed to respect. However, collaboration involves establishing successful cooperation between clinicians and patients to enhance compliance.
