The Parkinson’s is a disease that affects nerves in the brain leading to poor production of dopamine, a chemical released by the nerves which acts as a neurotransmitter. The Parkinson’s disease (PD) belongs to a group of diseases that are referred to as the Motor System Disorders. In the prognosis of the disease, it is crucial to note that PD is a chronic and progressive disease which means that when the patient is diagnosed with the disease, he/she are most likely going to die as it keeps on getting worse with time (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2014). The disease was coined after one of the English doctors called James Parkinson who back in the early 19th century wrote an article about the disease, detailing the all the aspects of the disease and how it affected the patient.
The key signs that a patient may be suffering from Parkinson are that facial expressions slowly fade away. This is due to the fact the patient has lost control of his facial muscles that are responsible for the facial expressions. Moreover, the patient will show signs of tremor and poor control of his limbs, rigidity of his trunk, unstable posture and poorly coordinated balance of the entire body (Parkinson’s disease Foundation, 2014). These are symptoms that start quite mildly and sometimes may be taken for granted in the early stages.
As the disease becomes more pronounced, the patient starts complaining of the inability to control his movements, poorly coordinated balance, talking becomes difficult and completing simple tasks also becomes complicated. The symptoms are further complicated by the fact that, the patient is not in a position to swallow properly and chew his food. There is also the aspect of the patient experiencing constipation and urination complications. Further, patients also have sleep deprivation resulting from sleep disorder. It is also noteworthy that the disease has been observed to affect the older generation starting from the age of 50 years onwards. In some of the patients, the disease seems to progress much faster than in some others, although there has not been any given cause for the same (Mayo Clinic, 2014).
Other than the fact that physical symptoms take a toll on the patients, there is also the aspect of the emotions. Patients have been found to show significant signs of depression, due to the fact that the patients are in their old age and their bodies are failing them. During the time that the disease has been in existence, there have not been laboratory tests that have been found to give the indication of future abilities to work around the diagnosis. Even with the amount of research that has been dedicated to PD, there are still a lot of difficulties related to the ability to diagnose the disease with great accuracy. Sometimes there must be brain scans to accurately confirm that the patient is suffering from PD (Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 2014).
