Provide a few examples of community resources that should be put in place to assist your population in resolving their healthcare needs. What gaps in service do you see that affect your population?
Downtown Phoenix requires community resources such as organized youth development programs and drug-prevention task forces targeting homeless African Americans. Availing of such resources will provide a safe space for the victims to meet healthcare providers to guide them to overcome their addiction. It will also discourage the practice when nurses are part of these programs because they would close the education and sensitization gap, reducing stigma and facilitating willingness to seek care (LeCroy & Milligan Associates, 2023). Thus, these resources are fundamental in stimulating positive changes.
Are there any cultural considerations that might inform your approach to caring for this population?
While caring for homeless African Americans, nurses must remain conscious of diverse cultural issues that might affect the service uptake. For instance, Benuto et al. (2020) indicate a need to consider confidentiality concerns and mistrust when screening and providing other services for this population. Understanding this cultural dynamic will inform their approach to ensure they do not trigger distrust, leading to apathy and reluctance to embrace the diverse interventions.
