(2023) sought to compare the effectiveness of the Mediterranean diet and low-carbohydrate diet on obese/overweight individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. As such, the target group in the study comprised 100 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients who were also obese/overweight. The intervention period in the study was 16 weeks, with the participants maintaining an energy deficit of 500 kcal per day on both diets. The results showed that both diets demonstrated positive effects on weight loss, lipid profile, glucose control, renal function, and blood pressure. However, a low carbohydrate diet showed a greater positive effect on blood pressure, BMI, lipid profile, glucose levels, cardiovascular risk, and waist circumference. The findings highlight the role of a low-carbohydrate diet as an obesity and diabetes management strategy.
