Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CA-UTI) is a frequent complication attributed to indwelling catheters in patients who are admitted in hospital for long periods. Research studies have shown that the incidence of CAUTI in this patient population can be reduced by practicing specific indwelling urinary catheter and urinary retention protocols (Muzzi-Bjornson & Macera, 2011). Intermittent catheterization, prompt removal of the catheter and proper insertion techniques are some of the methods suggested in reducing the incidence of CA-UTI. Despite this, the incidence of CA-UTI among chronically admitted patients remains high. Increasing incidence of CA-UTI is associated with prolonged hospital stay, increased management costs, morbidity and death (Muzzi-Bjornson & Macera, 2011).
Schneider (2012) conducted an evidence-based study titled "Prevention of CA-UTI in patients with hip fractures through education to specific catheter protocols". The aim of the evidence-based practice change project was to evaluate catheter protocols and educate nurses on the proper application of these protocols in patients diagnosed with hip fractures.
