Non-adherence to medication is known as a problem and recognized as the most challenging issue in treatment. Non-adherence to medication normally leads to increased cost of healthcare. Factors causing non-adherence are such as substance abuse, medication beliefs, side effects and lack of knowledge (Davidson, 2003). The impacts of non-adherence are re-hospitalization and many cases of relapse. Adherence to medication has positive results for patients developing good relationship with care practitioners and benefits from the purpose of medication. Enhancing adherence in schizophrenia may lead to important positive outcomes on the society and patients. In most cases, ignorance is the factor that leads to non-adherence while its impact is leads often to re-hospitalization.
Schizophrenia is a mental sickness that severely affects people. Seven out every one thousand adults globally are suffering from schizophrenia. Mathew and Shean (2003) say that although, the incidence of schizophrenia is low, its prevalence remains high due to its long-term chronic conditions. In order to manage schizophrenia effectively, it needs consistent long-term treatment to prevent relapse and control the symptoms. Despite the significance of medication, non-adherence to still happens. It is a problem globally, and it is known as one the most challenging issue in treating patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Non-adherence to medication may occur in several ways. For example, some patients may refuse to continue taking medication while others may partially change or irregularly use the daily medication doses. Partial adherence is just same as complete non-adherence.
Non-adherence has negative effects that lead to many cases of rehospitalization and relapse with severe mental sicknesses. Non-adherence leads to higher costs of treating schizophrenia. Non-adherence may cause severe negative effects on patient’s health, body functioning and increase the financial cost of treating schizophrenia. According to Davidson (2003), patients who are non-adherents to medication are at a greater risk of many health complications than those who adhere to their medication plans.
