Purpose and performing critical appraisal
The aim of critical analysis is to assess its value and worth to practice while also highlighting on flaws (Fineout-Overholt et al., 2010). Also related to this is the rapid critical appraisal, which focuses on determining the level of evidence, how a study was conducted and usefulness to practice (Fineout-Overholt, et al., 2010). Critical appraisal of articles is relevant in evidence-based practice, as the findings are useful in clinical decision making. Similarly, lack of confidence in performing critical appraisal hampers Evidence-based practice (Law& MacDermid, 2008).
In conducting the critical appraisal of an article, it is pertinent to focus on whether the research design is appropriate. The study design should protect against bias whereby RCTs are most likely to be robust while also considering whether they are ethically feasible. Furthermore the related study methods should address the question of biasness either through a random error which affects the study’ precision or systematic bias. Essentially, the research carried out or review of articles should focus on the topic pressure ulcer prevention.
Another area that requires attention is the results of a study. In appraising an article one should look into whether the information presented is objective and clearly presented. This is merely a presentation of the results spelt out in a logical and understandable manner. This can include the characteristics of the study population, and the statistical significance of the data presented under the results section. Overall, the type of evidence should be relevant to the area of pressure ulcer prevention and related to the reasons as to why a study was done.
