Big data has significantly changed how healthcare organizations evaluate and control complex data to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare cost. Its benefits lie in its ability to drive critical decision-making processes and turn complex data into actionable knowledge for precision medicine (Alexandru et al., 2018). In most situations, big data application in healthcare industry offers solutions for patient care development and value generation. However, this approach requires collaboration of all relevant stakeholders. They must create the technological infrastructure to house the large quantity of data (Pastorino, et al., 2019). Despite the many advantages of big data in healthcare industry, this technological advancement can be used if healthcare professionals address the security and privacy issues.
One of the benefits of big data is reduction as part of a clinical system is the prevention of medical errors that lead to more accurate diagnoses and treatment. Big data analytics are great tools for healthcare providers who handle many patients daily (Alexandruet al., 2018). Studies show that physicians and professionals are bound to make some clinical errors like prescribing wrong medicine prescribing a different medication during medical practices that tend to put the lives of the patients on line (Pastorino, et al., 2019).
However, big data can prevent such errors from happening because it analyzes each patient’s healthcare records, prescribed medication and any other concerns, such as medical history, allergies, and other relevant information (Alexandruet al., 2018).
