In 2003, the leading causes of mortality were heart diseases cancer and stroke respectively, while in 2010 heart diseases, cancer and chronic lower respiratory diseases were the three leading causes of death 24.2%, 23.3% and 5.6% respectively. These figures were represented as heart diseases 597,689 deaths, malignant neoplasms (cancer) at 574,743 and chronic low respiratory disease at 138,080 (CDC, 2010).
Heart diseases are the leading cause of death among Americans in recent years; and the risk factors associated with heart diseases includes obesity, smoking and lack of regular physical activities. Hence, it is necessary to look into how risk factors contribute to prevalence of diseases. The rationale behind this is that would also help to improve preventive care for sufferers of the leading causes of diseases.
