This is a commonly used term that describes the epidemiological practice of monitoring the spread of infection so as to understand and analyze the patterns of its development. This monitoring is done for a number of reasons, which vary from the need to identify the elements simply promoting the disease to keeping the pubic in the know over issues affecting their health. Surveillance data collected is sometimes erratic, and it is necessary to device a method of avoiding such errors.
Reporting to the health care organization (such as WHO), is not an efficient way of tracking notifiable diseases- especially in regions that the disease may cause alienation of the patient from the public (Salkind, 2012). This limits the cases reported, even in the case of mandatory reporting, to health care providers in a particular region.
