The Increased Use of Chemical Restraints in Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitals
For this Assignment, write a paragraph that addresses the following:
Practice Problem
State the practice problem in measurable terms and that reflect quality indicators. Include data that suggests a practice problem exists. Do not use anecdotal experiences or opinions.
This is the same problem described in the Week 1 Practice Experience discussion.
Keep in mind that this section may need to be revised after you complete all of the other sections.
Provide the rationale for selecting the practice problem.
For this Assignment, write 4-5 paragraphs that address the following:
Analysis of Existing Evidence
Summarize the findings from at least five evidence-based sources that support your practice problem. The goal of the analysis of existing evidence is to find the best evidence possible that support a change in practice. Identify research, clinical guidelines, expert opinions, and other relevant information and incorporate the results into your quality improvement project. You must include two-three research studies in your analysis. Using your own words synthesize the evidence that supports your identified practice problem. There should be no quotes or personal opinions included in this section
For this Assignment
Describe the quality improvement process and the Quality model that will be used. This is not your entire quality improvement plan, only a description of the quality improvement process and the quality model you chose. You will develop your specific quality improvement plan in week 4.
Include a description of a quality improvement tool(s) that you will use in your quality improvement plan. See Spath, (2018) chapter 6 for examples.
Explain why the specific process was selected and document your explanation with references.

The Increased Use of Chemical Restraints in Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitals
Caring for patients in psychiatric healthcare facilities presents healthcare workers with complex scenarios that require the restraint of violent and agitated individuals before assessing and determining their care. Muir‐Cochrane et al. (2019) acknowledge the application of coercive tactics with the increasing use of chemicals through the rapid tranquilization process, drawing significant criticism from professionals due to safety and choice concerns. Statistics reveal that practitioners provide up to 76% of more than 43,000 emergency department patients with sedation (Smith et al., 2021). Moreover, in a study involving 12,977 participants, approximately 2,047, or 15.8%, experienced rapid tranquilization, demonstrating the frequency of chemical restraint use (Smith et al., 2021). Other emerging worries highlight racial disparities in the use of these practices, with African Americans being more likely to experience these incidences. Thus, this paper investigates the effectiveness of brainstorming and fishbone diagrams in assisting healthcare providers in addressing chemical restraint use issues, improving psychiatric care delivery and patient experiences.
Analysis of Existing Evidence
Researchers have explored chemical restraints as a rising psychiatric care problem with a focus on the safety and effectiveness of the practice. Muir‐Cochrane and Oster (2021) agree
