Introduction
The primary role of research in nursing is directed towards applying nursing theories in a bid to determine the discovery of new knowledge in practice. Professional caregivers remain passionate about the provision of quality care to the patient. Their intent is directed towards ensuring that patients experience care and love they require to reach their potential health goals. The PICOT question for this evidence-based project can be established as P-population of interest and problem (Nurses turnover in D.O.U), I-interventions required for practice (empowerment of the physical and psychological conditions), C-comparison of interventions (compassion fatigue and job dissatisfaction), O-outcomes needed for practice (compassion satisfaction, optimal work performance, and patient safety), and T-time required for the intervention to achieve its goals over a stated duration of time. The question statement determines that: within a nursing working in a care unit (P), will employments of the physical and psychological conditions (I) reduce their compassion fatigue and impact nurse turnover rates, improve job satisfaction (C) as well as enhance optimal working performance (O) over a specified period of time (T).
Theory Identified to Support Proposed Solution
Nursing theories have the capacity of influencing practice in several ways that may result in profound impacts. Theories are known to initiate frameworks that define and support nursing practice, the quality of patient care, and can be utilized in different practice situations in a bid to provide solutions to some of the nursing problems. The application of theory in finding solutions to nursing challenges can be used to direct patient care cases as well as administrative and management issues in the nursing care process(Watson, 2011). The benefits of theory application in addressing some of the dilemmas experienced by nurses can be demonstrated through the application of Jean Watson’s theory of human care. The supporting theory used in the completion of this project is Jean Watson’s theory of human care. Jean Watson is considered as one of the prominent care theorists who define care as a science. In consideration of this theory, it is clear that to implement the proposed intervention efficiently; it would be important to apply the concept of human caring as detailed in the theory of Jean Watson.
Main Components of Jean Watson’s Theory
The primary components of the theory of human caring are based on the assumption that the crux and foundation of nursing exist in caring science as the central discipline of nursing. In this case, it is assumed that interpersonal interactions remain the primary expressions of care in as much as the process of care is not limited by space, time, and physical aspects. The theory, therefore, describes the process of care in ten elements that are developed to promote healing, wholeness, health and the process that involves growth for the client and his family(Watson, 2011). Caring, on the other hand, initiates harmony with medical science and cure while on the contrary providing realistic relationships that are bound to encourage the emergence of the human spirit. The ten processes detailed in Watson’s theory of human caring can be described as nursing interventions that determine the connections and expressions between the process of care and love. The ten criteria include:
1 Instilling hope and faith in others
2 Practicing the act of loving kindness towards others and self
3 The need to Nature individual practices and beliefs for others and self
4 Promoting, trusting and helping relationships
5 The acceptance of negative and positive feelings
6 The development of creative solutions through the use of scientific methods
7 Genuine learning and teaching that supports the needs of individuals
8 The creation of a healing environment that meets the spiritual, physical, and societal needs of the patients and care givers
9 The provision of acts of healing by addressing basic human needs
10 Remaining open to unknown existence and mysteries
Rationale for Selecting Theory Provided
This theory has received a greater empirical support as compared to others like the Maslow and Herzberg’s theories. This is in consideration of its job satisfaction between the subjects of research that has been done by utilizing this model. The research was done byBurtson & Stichler (2011)focused on the psychological state came up with great results that disclosed the psychological roles played an important theoretical and practical role within the Watson’s theory. With this in mind, this theory is justified to be used in this research as it relates to the proposed solutions, and this research paper aims at solving the problems that this research identified.
How Theory Works to Support Proposed Solution
Nurses who engage in the process of care are bound to experience compassion fatigue (CF), a precursor that details the levels of burnout, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization, an aspect that affects their ability to perform their duties efficiently. The symptoms of CF are considered to develop over a period and vary in nature, with some including the feelings of depression, sadness, numbness, anxiety, avoidance behaviors, poor self-esteem, and cynicism(Burtson & Stichler, 2011). Among nurses, research has established that CF reduces productivity, an aspect that increases staff turnovers and results in patient dissatisfaction that negatively impacts the safety of patients.
Caregivers who have the capacity to express empathy and compassion in the process of care are vulnerable to contracting CF when exposed to intense situations. CF, in this case, has an ...
