Implementation of the IOM Future Nursing ReportThe Nursing profession registers the highest workforce in United States with over three million members. Nurses play a vital role in the realization of Affordable Care Act set in 2010 and the Obama healthcare plan. A number of barriers exist in the nursing profession that deters nurses from responding rapidly to the evolving health care system and the changing settings in the system. The barriers need to be dealt with to enhance an enabling environment where nurses can perform efficiently. This necessitated the launching of a collaborative initiative by The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). An ad hoc committee was formed to research on a number of issues. The committee studied the scope and level of practice barriers. The need to increase opportunities for nurses in diffusing collaborative improvement efforts was checked. The committee also researched residency programs available for nurses. A concern was also raised about the number of nurses holding a baccalaureate degree. The committee also established the number of nurses with doctorate degrees (Reid et. Al 2005).
Lifelong learning activities and habits among nurses were also studied by the committee. The enabling environment was noted to be of great effect in the advancement process of nurses. The committee conceptualized the role nurses play with regard to technology, societal issues and the entire workforce. The importance of increasing capacity of nursing schools was noted. The committee observed the current nursing education and raised concerns about redesigning it. Redesigning the system would ensure that the nurses adequate number of nurses are presented in the market who meet health care demands. Innovate solutions regarding delivery of services, health professional education and care delivery were also examined by the committee. Practices involved in attracting and retaining nurses in public health, long term care ambulatory services, and acute care were studied (In Goudreau and In Smolenski, 2014).
The committee produced a report which is important in transforming the nursing sector. The report recommended that nurses should be encouraged to practice in full potential of their training and education. This will open up opportunities for nurses in the sector. Nurses will also be encouraged to train and pursue education in visualization of opportunities. Consequently, the practice barriers will be eliminated. The report proposed expansion of opportunities thus diffusing collaborative improvement efforts. Nursing education programs, healthcare organizations, nursing associations and healthcare funders should spearhead the expansion programs. Through collaborative measures with physicians and other medical team members, nurses will be able to diffuse standard practices (Donaldson, 2011).
Implementation of nurse residency programs is another recommendation put forth by the report. The federal government, health care organizations, accrediting bodies and state boards can facilitate a transition to practice procedures. This will enable nurses to improve in their careers. Residency programs will also ensure a smooth transition for nurses into new clinical practices. According to the committee report, the number nurses holding baccalaureate degrees is very low. The report proposed to increase the number of nurses enrolling for degree programs so that by 2020, the number will be significant. The percentage is currently at 50 percent of all registered nurses. The objective is to secure an increase to 80 percent. Academic nurse leaders can partner with healthcare funders, employers, education accrediting bodies to ensure progress and funding of the program becomes successful. Such training exposure increases the quality of work that nurses give to patients and other related practices. The demands of nursing shall be met since the number of professionals in the fi...
