Introduction
Healthcare delivery models are significant components in healthcare delivery, evident in all healthcare institutions in the United States (US). The models are essential in guiding and providing direction on all operations within the institution. They also facilitate and manage changes that may occur in the healthcare environment. The role of nurse leadership and overall management is vital in ensuring safe and quality healthcare systems through laws and policies. The pay-for-performance element is essential in steering motivation for overall progress (Fulton et al., 2019). Leadership and management in the nursing profession help manage and govern desired changes now and in the future. The essay will look at an emerging healthcare law, quality and pay for performance measures, leadership and management roles that have surfaced, and the emerging trends in the nursing profession.
The Affordable Care Act
The healthcare workforce must be dedicated and determined to offer quality and safe services. The healthcare delivery system in the US has been struck by several challenges over time, prompting the urgent need for reformation and restructuring of the system. The Affordable care act is one significant way to achieve the reformation and restructuring of the healthcare system. A vivid increase in the affordability and accessibility of healthcare in the US has been seen through the law (Bauchner, 2016). However, this is not the complete reformation needed since healthcare delivery still has a domineering problem, especially in rural regions. The problem entails an inadequate number of health professionals in these regions to offer quality care.
The Affordable Care Act has three major goals. One major goal is to make health insurance affordable, accessible, and available to many people (Bauchner, 2016). The result is reduced costs within households struck with poverty. The second goal of the law is to extend the coverage of Medicaid to cover adults who receive a total income that is below 138% of the federal poverty level (FPL) (Bauchner, 2016). The law’s final goal is to offer full support towards health care delivery techniques that are intended to lower the general cost of healthcare.
Nurse shortage is dominant in the rural areas of the US, which impairs health care delivery. The solution is improving nurse recruitment and retention in those areas to enable individualized and specific health care services to all patients. A specific focus will be laid on the higher education training institutes, offering standard and quality training. The strategy is believed to birth competent and versatile nurses. Enrollment of nurse students in the training institutions will also be increased to provide an adequate workforce in healthcare facilities and henceforth alienate nurse burnout. Nurses have a significant role to play in promoting the desired change. Professional nurses are encouraged to offer guidance and support to individuals with a desire to pursue a career. Professional nurses have various groups and programs that involve career counselors who meet the students in schools and guide them in career choices. Every nurse is called upon to understand, embrace, and facilitate the change and its implementation strategies to better the healthcare system in the US.
