Healthcare workers play a fundamental role in enhancing patients’ health through the concepts of health promotion, maintenance, restoration, and teaching. Patients with chronic illnesses can especially benefit from these concepts because they need to be empowered to cope with chronic illness and obtain an optimum level of health. This paper focuses on the concepts of health promotion, maintenance, restoration, and teaching to an adult patient with hypertension.
Health Promotion
Health promotion refers to the process of increasing an individual’s level of health wellness through empowerment to enable the individual to take responsibility for their health (Polan & Taylor, 2019; Kadri, 2019). Health promotion encourages people to adopt positive health behaviors such as exercising and healthy eating. Adults with hypertension need to engage in health-promoting behaviors. According to Carey et al. (2018), hypertension contributes to cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease, among others. Lifestyle factors such as physical inactivity and unhealthy diets are some of the risk factors for hypertension among adults. Various health promotion activities can help adults with hypertension lead healthier lives and improve their quality of life. They include, but are not limited to:
* Improved nutrition- A diet consisting of vegetables, whole grains, fruits, low-fat dairy products, legumes, nuts, and lean proteins effectively maintains optimal blood pressure among adults (Carey et al., 2018). Health promotion campaigns advocating for improved nutrition can help hypertensive patients achieve their health goals.
* Adequate intake of potassium and sodium- Carey et al. (2018) indicate that low potassium intake and high intake of sodium contribute to hypertension. Health promotion among adults with hypertension includes recommending optimal potassium and sodium intake.
* Physical Activity- Physical inactivity contributes to hypertension, and patients should engage in adequate physical activity such as aerobic exercises (Carey et al., 2018).
* Weight Management- Overweight and obesity increases the risk of hypertension. Carey et al. (2018) indicate that over 40% of adults with hypertension are obese. Thus, maintaining a normal body mass index is recommended as part of health promotion among hypertensive adults.
Health Maintenance
Health maintenance refers to the prevention and early detection of diseases (Polan & Taylor, 2019). This is facilitated by regular screening for the disease to ensure that those who have already developed the disease but are unaware they have the disease receive interventions at the earliest time possible. Regular screening also ensures that those who have not yet developed the disease continue being disease-free. Health maintenance for hypertension involves regular screening for high blood pressure among adults. According to Jin (2021), screening is beneficial to adults who do not have a hypertension diagnosis. It is also advisable for adults with hypertension to regularly monitor their blood pressure. Screening involves measuring blood pressure using a blood pressure monitor, and it can be done at home or a healthca...
