The healthcare industry is an aggregation and integration of sectors within the economic system that provides goods and services to treat patients with rehabilitative, palliative, curative and preventive care. The healthcare industry is important since it provides solutions to health conditions that affect human and animal health. In addition, it has undergone numerous changes over the past years due to technology advancement and other factors that have resulted to better healthcare services. On the other hand the sector has been facing challenges that hinder activities either from the personnel perspective, care processes or due to policies adoption among others. Thus, the paper presents a summery interview with Suzanne Anderson who is the executive vice president of Virginia Mason Health System with more than 15 years experience in ambulatory care.
Question on the changes that have occurred in the past five years
According to the interviewee, in the past five years, health insurance was introduced which has led to increase in accessibility of healthcare services at lower costs (Garthwaite, Gross, & Notowidigdo, 2013). Both government and non-government sponsored heath based campaigns have been conducted over the past few years towards the same aspect coupled with other issues. This has created awareness among people on health related issues, a factor that has seen many people embrace their health. Some of these campaigns include anti-smoking campaigns to reduce smoking. In addition, there have been intense therapies after diagnoses that have positively impacted on healthy living as well as improvement on the mental health of patients.
Elsewhere, the introduction of invasive and robotic techniques have revolutionized surgery and it is now possible to remove a kidney through a single incision in the patients unlike ten years ago where the same surgery would leave a 10 inch scar on a patient’s body(Lanfranco et al., 2014).
