The UN has developed a number of projects called Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These MDGs were adopted by the global leaders in 2000 and they were all aimed at reducing extreme poverty as well as establishing various time-bound targets (United Nations Development Program, 2017). The MDG 4 is to reduce child mortality. Indeed, since 1990 when the MDGs were adopted, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to reduce child mortality. As a result, the mortality rate among children aged less than five years has reduced by more than 50% since 1990 (United Nations Development Program, 2017). Although there has been a decline in infant mortality rate regionally and globally, countries in Sub-Saharan Africa experienced an increase in infant mortality since the late 1990s because of the HIV epidemic (Schell, Reilly, Rosling, Peterson & Ekstrom, as cited in Sartorius & Sartorius, 2014).
