Doing Proper Health Care Management
In the Module 1 Overview, there are six management functions reviewed: (1) Planning, (2) Organizing, (3) Staffing, (4) Controlling, (5) Directing, and (6) Decision making. All six of these functions are equally important and dependent on one another. As a health care administrator/manager, you will have to effectively balance all the six of the management functions well. In addition, there are 3 key competencies that must be embraced by a health care manager to effectively carry out these management functions: (1) Conceptual skills, (2) Technical skills, and (3) Interpersonal skills.

Planning in health care management is concerned with formulating strategies in the health care facility, such as a hospital, to attain particular goals. This will also involve setting and creating goals which the organization can realize over a given period of time. Planning includes both short-term and long-term plans. Some short-term plans can include scheduling nurses within the week and formulating a monthly budget every month for the hospital or any other health facility. Long-term plans can include planning to improve the quality of health care systems by increasing the number of health workers, purchasing more efficient equipment for treatment, and many others (Lamichhane, 2017).
Organizing health care management refers to the systematic overall designing of the organization or the hospital. It will also involve the distribution of authority in the hospital through the designation of the job. Organizing outlines the formal structure of the hospital through departmentalization. It is the duty of managers to organize the hospital facility into departments, and this enhances the division of work in hospitals hence ensuring efficiency, which improves the quality of health care.
Staffing in health care management involves recruiting and hiring highly qualified and eligible health workers for particular positions in the health facility. Health care staffing plays an important role in patient satisfaction. Health care staffing forms the primary workforce in the health facility. This helps to ensure clinician quality and also helps to increase nurse-patient ratios (AMN Healthcare, 2020). This works towards achieving quality patient experience. It is important to note that staffing is also involved in deploying performing staff to different departments of the facility. This ensures all departments work towards the success of the facility in providing quality health care.
Controlling in health care management helps to measure the progress of the organization in achieving the set goals and targets. It is involved in assessing various departments of the health facility. Managers will control the facility by ensuring that every health worker is in his/her respective working places doing the right thing or the assigned job. Controlling in the facility helps it to achieve set goals and targets (Cogin et al., 2016).
The directing function of health care management is whereby the manager’s issue guidance, instructions, and oversee the workforce in achieving the goals of the health facility. This function can be confused with the controlling, but they are way different. This function is more of supervising, but controlling is more of evaluating (Healey and Marchese, 2012). Directing will also involve the motivation of the health workers to achieve the set goals. An example of direction is the managers may give nurses guidance on the best medicine to give for particular ailment like malaria.
Finally, decision making in health care management involves choosing between different options in the health facility. Better decisions made in the health facility will lead to better outcomes in patient satisfaction (Layman, 2011). For example, the nurses may decide on the treatment of patients, whether outpatient or in-patient. Patients with severe illness may require to be admitted while those with less serious ailments may be treated through attending check-ups from their homes.
