Introduction
All processes and structures that defend the body against pathogens and disease-causing organisms form the immune system. Lymphatic and immune systems work closely to protect the body against pathogens. Lymph nodes, vessels, and lymph fluid form the parts of the lymphatic system (YouTube, 2016). The thymus, spleen, and tonsils are also part of the system. On the other hand, the immune system mainly consists of white blood cells (WBCs and bone marrow). The lymphatic system removes extracellular fluid, absorbs fats from the digestive tract, and transports the immune system cells (YouTube, 2016). The immune system generally protects by fighting off harmful organisms from the body using WBCs.
Innate and Adaptive parts of the Immune System
The immune system's defensive processes can be grouped into innate and adaptive immunity. Innate immunity is the first line and initial defense action against disease-causing pathogens (Fox & Rompolski, 2019). It includes both internal and external defenses. They are first employed to prevent the invasion of pathogens and infection spread. In cases where innate immunity is inadequate to completely countereffect the pathogens, lymphocytes are used as a reinforcement for innate defense.
Adaptive immunity refers to processes where specific pathogens are recognized. It involves antigens, haptens, and immunoassays (Fox & Rompolski, 2019). Antigens trigger the release of antibodies, after which they combine to offer an immune response. Antigens are usually foreign in the blood and other body fluids because the immune system differentiates its molecules from other organisms (Fox & Rompolski, 2019).
