Fall Prevention and Intervention and Activities Involvement that can Reduce Fall Incidence
In nursing practice, accurate identification and application of research is essential to achieving successful outcomes. Being able to articulate the information and successfully summarize relevant peer-reviewed articles in a scholarly fashion helps to support the student's ability and confidence to further develop and synthesize the progressively more complex assignments that constitute the components of the course change proposal capstone project.
For this assignment, the student will provide a synopsis of eight peer-reviewed articles from nursing journals using an evaluation table that determines the level and strength of evidence for each of the eight articles. The articles should be current within the last 5 years and closely relate to the PICOT statement developed earlier in this course. The articles may include quantitative research, descriptive analyses, longitudinal studies, or meta-analysis articles. A systematic review may be used to provide background information for the purpose or problem identified in the proposed capstone project. Use the "Literature Evaluation Table" resource to complete this assignment.
While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

6 Australian hospitals over 1 year / Participants were all patients admitted to the 24 acute wards during the entire trial period
Data from 13623 community-residing elders in independent housing across 24 states over a period of 1 year was collected for the study
221 non-transported fallers from Sydney, Australia
1010 participants over 65 years across 9 NHS trusts in the UK and 1 in Ireland over 12 months
Methods: Intervention/Instruments
Wards were assigned with either usual care or nurse-led 6-PACK program
All adults assessed at baseline and a subset assessed at 1 year using the InterRAI Community Health Assessment and InterRAI Wellness Assessment tools
Intervention identified risk factors and provided appropriate services in response while control group only received fall prevention advice in written form
Participants received fall prevention leaflet with footwear advice
Analysis
Analysis was based on examining falls and fall injuries per 1000 occupied bed days
Comparison of fall risk factors against falls dependent variables using chi-square and odds ration methods
Rates of falls, injurious falls, hospitalization, and quality of life were assessed over 12 months. Data subjected to binomial regression and multivariate analysis
Incidence rate of falls per participant was primary outcome. EuroQoL-5 Dimensions were used
Key Findings
After 1831 falls and 613 fall injuries, the rates of fall and fall injuries was similar for both intervention and control wards
Problem resolution reduces fall rate for majority of measures; Physical exercise and cognitive activities associated with lower fall rates
Intervention participants that observed interventions had lower fall rates compared to non-adherers
Intervention was potentially effective and safe
Recommendations
Further research is needed to establish the effectiveness of fall prevention interventions
Findings highlight some potential interventions for reducing fall rate that need to be further explored
Delivering care to this population requires identifying individuals likely to engage in prevention interventions and providing said assistance
