EVIDENCE-BASED PROJECT, PART 3: CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF RESEARCH
Essay Instructions:
Realtors rely on detailed property appraisals—conducted using appraisal tools—to assign market values to houses and other properties. These values are then presented to buyers and sellers to set prices and initiate offers.
Research appraisal is not that different. The critical appraisal process utilizes formal appraisal tools to assess the results of research to determine value to the context at hand. Evidence-based practitioners often present these findings to make the case for specific courses of action.
In this Assignment, you will use an appraisal tool to conduct a critical appraisal of published research. You will then present the results of your efforts.
To Prepare:
Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you selected in Module 2 and the four systematic reviews (or other filtered high- level evidence) you selected in Module 3.
Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you selected in Module 2 and analyzed in Module 3.
Review and download the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template provided in the Resources.
The Assignment (Evidence-Based Project)

For example, you may choose two unfiltered research articles from Module 2 and two filtered research articles (systematic reviews) from Module 3 or one article from Module 2 and three articles from Module 3. You can choose any combination of articles from the prior Module Assignments as long as both modules and types of studies are represented.
Part 3B: Critical Appraisal of Research

Understanding how to deal with psychological issues in healthcare and the real world is essential for every healthcare professional. Accordingly, one of these psychological issues that the author of this paper has discussed before is Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). MDD is a pervasive mental health concern, particularly in the young adult population. Characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest in pleasurable activities, and a variety of cognitive and physical symptoms, MDD can significantly impair an individual's functioning and quality of life (Bains & Abdijadid, 2023). One of the most common non-pharmacological methods is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), based on the theory that maladaptive cognitive patterns influence mood and behavior, which can be addressed through structured psychotherapy (Gautam et al., 2020). In the subsequent sections of this paper, the author will appraise the previous studies cited and propose the best practices that emerged from them.
CBT as the Best Practice
As mentioned earlier, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the most established methods of dealing with MDD. As of today, the body of evidence appraised in the preceding modules highlights the sheer effectiveness of CBT across diverse delivery modes. More particularly, this includes traditional face-to-face therapy, smartphone applications, and internet-based platforms (as different mediums), each demonstrating efficacy in reducing depressive symptoms and improving overall well-being in adults with MDD. The critical synthesis of this evidence suggests a convergence on a best practice that embraces both traditional and digital modalities of CBT.
First, in one study by López-López et al. (2019), the authors provided a comprehensive analysis of CBT delivery, emphasizing the importance of treatment fidelity and adaptability to patient needs. While this method is widely known for these two characteristics (among others), it is worth noting that this importance has been repeatedly emphasized from previous studies as early as McHugh et al.'s (2009) study about how CBT's fidelity and adaptability can be used to develop more effective trans-diagnostic interventions. Going back to López-López et al.'s work, the author realized that this systematic review and network meta-analysis offered insights into the comparative effectiveness of various CBT modalities, which is crucial in tailoring interventions to individual preferences, thereby enhancing treatment engagement and outcomes.
