Part 3A: Critical Appraisal of Research
Conduct a critical appraisal of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected by completing the Evaluation Table within the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template. Choose a total of four peer-reviewed articles that you selected related to your clinical topic of interest in Module 2 and Module 3.
Note: You can choose any combination of articles from Modules 2 and 3 for your Critical Appraisal. For example, you may choose two unfiltered research articles from Module 2 and two filtered research articles (systematic reviews) from Module 3 or one article from Module 2 and three articles from Module 3. You can choose any combination of articles from the prior Module Assignments as long as both modules and types of studies are represented.

Design/Method 
Describe the design and how the study was carried out (In detail, including inclusion/exclusion criteria).
The study employed a convergent triangulation approach incorporating both qualitative and quantitative data. It involved six different clinical areas in a private acute-care hospital where bedside handover had been previously introduced. A sample size of thirty episodes of the handover was observed and audio recorded. In addition, a bedside Handover tool (HoW4) was used to collect quantitative data from the study participants. The inclusion criteria included registered general nurses who regularly participated in bedside handover.
The study used a descriptive research design where data was collected through observation of change-of-shift handoffs and focus groups in four critical care units at a large medical center. One hundred nurse shift handoffs were observed, focusing on the reasons and types of interruptions during shift handoff. The inclusion criteria were nurses who had completed unit orientation on the units and were responsible for caring for patients independently.
The study used a cross-sectional survey design to analyze a hypothesized model of factors affecting the quality of handover communication between incoming and outgoing nurses in the ED. The inclusion criteria included registered nurses who provide direct patient care in the ED, participated in a handoff at least with the past ten days, worked in ED for at least six months, were fluent in English, and provided informed consent. Of the 650 selected nurses in Ontario who worked in hospital ED, only 316 nurses returned their survey responses. The final eligible sample was 231, and so the overall response rate was 40 percent. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires scored on Likert-type scales.
The study conducted a literature review and process mapping of both nursing and medical transfer documentation to improve understanding of current handover processes as well as patient issues that demand continuous reflection, management, and follow-up. There were no inclusion criteria. Fifty summaries of identified current were graphed on a control chart for statistical control.

The purposeful sampling method was used to facilitate the collection of rich data on bedside handover practices. A sample size of thirty episodes was deemed adequate to sufficiently describe bedside handover’s structure, content, and process.
The random sampling method was used to select nurses from a list of units working on the unit who met the inclusion criteria. A sample size of one hundred episodes of handoffs was used. In addition to observations, focus groups of thirty-four participants were used.
The random sampling method was used to select participants from a group of nurses who agreed to participate in the study. Thus, a sample size of 650 nurses was invited to take part in the survey.
