Introduction
Social determinants of health are non-medical factors that influence health outcomes. They influence disparities in health care which refer to the differences in health and health care between groups closely linked to economic, social, and economic disadvantage. Disparities in healthcare have many adverse effects since they limit the overall gains for care and health for the broader population and lead to unnecessary costs. States, local and private organization engage in efforts to address disparities in the health care system. However, there are challenges that health care practitioners face while addressing inequalities, including limited capacity to address social determinants of health.
Actions to create change
Leadership in healthcare is a living phenomenon, and it is required to change shape according to its purpose and the demands of the environment and followers. Changing behaviours, attitudes and actions make one a better leader. A leader should act and show enthusiasm as it has a positive influence in bringing about change. Showing enthusiasm also offers support to the organization’s mission to eradicate healthcare challenges when addressing disparities (Dye Chapters 10 & 16 F Dye, 2010). Moreover, a leader should pay attention to all measures of performance. Therefore, they should focus on addressing all the social determinants of health rather than leaving them to chance.
Additionally, leaders should set clear objective goals to help them measure their performance, decisions and activities. These objectives should include key initiatives that aim to address the health care disparities. They should also set objectives to overcome the challenges faced in addressing health disparities, such as increasing funding for healthcare workforce initiatives to measure and raise awareness about these disparities. Also, leaders should set up SMART goals that focus on both the present and the future, hence encouraging risk-taking. This will result in a change in the healthcare organization and the environment, thus suppressing the challenges faced in addressing the social determinants of health.
Exercise Outsight.
Kouzes and Posner confer about the need of leaders to exercise outsight whereby in a practical sense, leaders should lead by wandering about and asking questions (Kouzes & Posner, 2017). This practice enables leaders to influence people to seek innovation. Leaders should be conscious of external realities and promote free flow of communication from inside and outside the organization to seize initiatives for change.
The importance of exercise outsight in the healthcare system enables leaders and healthcare practitioners to move beyond their habitual thinking patterns. Exercise outsight can help healthcare leaders to seek innovative ways to change the health disparities in the healthcare system. Exercise outsight promotes external and internal communication; hence, this supports the free flow of ideas and provides innovative solutions to address health disparities. Also, it is possible to look out for good ideas which may help challenge the process. Analyzing the external realities while also apprehending the internal nature of things is crucial for innovation to occur. External outsight advocates for leaders to treat every job as an adventure. Leaders should lead the healthcare organizations’ members to explore different areas and communities largely impacted by the social determinants of health. This promotes the collection of new ideas which might help address the social determinants of health.
