Learning ways have evolved over the years, shifting from focusing on detecting certain behaviour or quality and now based on the process by which it was acquired. Assessment from a classroom perspective focuses on students' study and work patterns, their understanding of what they are learning, and grading and instructional decisions from the teachers (Tempelaar et al., 2018). Generally, assessment is a way of checking that learning has occurred. Assessment can be grouped into formative, summative, and diagnostic assessments. This paper focuses on the main principles of formative assessment, its usage with learners, and also on the quiz and interactive technique comparison based on the elderly medicine ward setting.
Formative assessment refers to methods of a wide variety that teachers employ to conduct continuous evaluations of students, their learning needs, understanding, and their progress academically during a lesson or a course hence for learning. It helps teachers provide academic support to students and make adjustments to lessons and instructional techniques by identifying the concepts that students struggle to comprehend and skills that students find a challenge to acquire or standards of learning they yet to achieve (Andrade, 2018). Formative assessment aims to gather detailed information that can come in handy when improving students' learning during learning sessions.
Formative assessment is believed to be a vital part of effective teaching since they are integrated into teaching and learning. The assessment helps teachers detect learning needs and challenges and also, in various cases, helps students understand their academic strengths and challenges (Tempelaar et al., 2018). The realization helps students plan and know areas where they need to put more effort into their learning to improve their academic progress. The relationship between the students and teachers is also improved and can be said to create a healthier relationship that is beneficial to all.
The main principles for effective formative assessment include integrating or incorporating assessment into the learning and teaching process, using assessment to promote student self-regulation, and using assessment evidence to advance and promote learning (Andrade, 2018). Employing the principles enables students and teachers to answer the three questions that form the basis of formative assessment: What is to be learned or where are we going? Where are we now? and where to next? The questions act as a form of direction towards achieving success for both the teacher and the students.
In answering the question, where are we going? The teaching and learning process is set in motion. The goals of the subject or learning process at hand are outlined, and the question of determining whether the goals set have been achieved is posed. The question act as a form of a monitoring system that enables both parties to analyze their progress (Barron, 2020). Formative assessment also offers the chance of tracking the students learning progress and know where they are from students' self-assessment and teachers' planned Actionable Principles 27 strategies. The outcome of the self-assessment and teacher's planned Actionable Principles 27 strategies promotes the advancement stage or move to learn forward principle providing an answer for the third question, where to next, which is used to point a way forward.
Teachers use the evidence gathered from the latter principle to improve the learning of students by adjusting the instruction or providing feedback to students advising where necessary (Tempelaar et al., 2018).
