The United States healthcare system has significant disparities concerning vulnerable populations. The vulnerable population is characterized by an inability to access proper healthcare, high morbidity and mortality rates, and higher risk factors than those of the general population. The population includes; the elderly, immigrants, the disabled, low-income earners, the homeless, and the chronically ill (Shivayogi, 2013).
A 2016 report by the U.S Census Bureau indicated there were 46 million people who were 65+ years and estimated a 52 million increase by 2060 (Colby & Ortman, 2014). The elderly or senior citizens are considered a special population and one of the most vulnerable. Their vulnerability is economical due to the high costs of health care and living standards that exceed their income.
