The nursing shortage has been as a result of migration of nurses globally, which has in turn affected the ability of the nursing industry to meet the growing demand for healthcare.
Effects of the Global Nursing shortage on health policy
The global nursing shortage has affected the health systems globally more than any other profession shortage because nurses make the highest contribution to the provision of healthcare services. As such, there has been a need for policy changes to effectively manage the problem. The health policy has been affected by the global nursing shortage in terms of funding policies (Oulton, 2006). More funding should be allocated to the health sector to ensure improved infrastructures such as sanitation. In addition, the shortage has affected the workforce policy in the health sector globally since the migration is causing imbalances in the distribution of nurses. The shortage has also affected the nurse recruitment and retention policy because governments are trying to recruit nurses and reduce migration to other countries.
Effects of Global Nursing shortage on the UN Millennium Development Goals
The millennium development goals related to health are concerned with strengthening the healthcare system across the globe. However, the global nursing shortage has posed a challenge to these goals because, with the shortage of nurses, access to health has been limited in most countries (Mendes & Ventura, 2017). It is impossible to expand the provision of health service, whose demand has been on the rise due to the growing population. Nurses form the largest part of the healthcare workforce and without them, provision of healthcare will deteriorate, blocking the achievement of the millennium development goals. Strengthening of the health systems has been negatively affected by the imminent human resource crisis in the health sector. As such, access to health care has not been equitable since the poor cannot afford to pay the costs.
