Contractual employment has become necessary in the recent past as employers seek to meet organizational goals while navigating pertinent issues of human resource management. The healthcare industry and nursing profession is not an exception to these issues. The healthcare providers opt for contractual employment for varied reasons especially cost and policy related that can stifle the management and running of a health facility CITATION Ben14 \l 1033 (Goodman, 2014). The management and leadership of the health facility ought to strike a good balance in hiring employees on contract or on a permanent basis as both systems of employment has its benefits and disadvantages. This essay seeks to elucidate on contractual terms of employment to nurses and how they can be solved by informed management strategies to streamline operations. Theories, principles, and skills that can be employed to solve issues related to nursing contractual terms are also discussed in detail and the best approach pertinent to the issue recommended.
Use of contract employees
Organizations seek to tap into the contractors’ potential to tackle the human resource shortage they commonly face in their service delivery. Sometimes, they are hired to supplement and complement the efforts of the permanent staff. Contract nurses often are young medical students (not limited to this faction) who seek industry experience in their respective fields before furthering their studies or seek to enrich their resumes. Thus, health facilities which are often faced with the challenge of financing their operations and especially payroll expenses CITATION Nel15 \l 1033 (Nelson, 2015). They opt to enlist these young, inexperienced professionals on a contractual basis. This is partly because their services are relatively cheaper than more experienced nurses who have been in the industry. Health facilities also do not take chances with fresh graduates as putting them on a permanent basis can bloat the payroll without significant value addition to the workforce especially regarding experience. Therefore, the best terms to enlist them is by contracts that they have to agree and sign and often include clauses that favor the management of the health facility. Permanent staff who are typically unionized is hard to alter the terms of their engagement after hiring. Thus, the contractual nurses fill this gap.
There are various advantages of contractual employment to the management. Firstly, the employers can opt to enlist them on a permanent basis after the expiry of the contract if they have proven to be resourceful. Contract workers also agree and sign to custom terms as they are being hired and therefore the management can offer terms which are favorable to them.
