Numerous sexually acquired illnesses can be transmitted intramuscularly, subcutaneously, and intravenously (Inaba et al., 2014). The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). One of the ways that HIV/AIDS can be transmitted is by sharing needles among infected and non-infected people. Based on the World Health Organization (WHO) 2020 report, approximately 37.7 million individuals are infected with HIV, and two-thirds are from Africa (WHO, 2021). Other ways HIV/AIDS can be transmitted include the exchange of semen, blood, vaginal secretions, and breast milk.
Individuals infected with HIV/AIDS get early symptoms. They include chills, night sweats, fever, sore throat, rash, fatigue, muscle aches, mouth ulcers, and swollen lymph nodes (CDC, 2021). However, some infected people do not get these signs. When a person acquires AIDS, the immune system weakens and cannot protect the body against infections or microorganisms. The symptoms of AIDS are pneumonia, rapid weight loss, recurring fever, diarrhea, extreme tiredness, sores of the anus, genitals, and mouth, memory loss, and neurologic disorders (HIV.gov, 2020).
