The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) works with other nurses to improve patient care and the healthcare system, through using evidence based practice in healthcare settings. Having a master’s degree in nursing is the common route for CNLs as this integrates both competence and knowledge of nursing in improving nursing care (Fitzpatrick & Kazer, 2009). Specialist nurses typically also have advanced degrees, but their roles differ with those of Clinical Nurse Leaders, and Clinical Nurse Leaders also need to get CNL certification for approved programs and prove their competencies.
The role of the CNL extends to various settings of the healthcare system, involving both implementation and evaluation of patient care.
