Reply to this discussion post positively: The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) has been proposed as the terminal degree for advanced nursing practice, sparking significant debate. According to DeNisco (2024), the DNP was designed to prepare nurses for the highest level of clinical practice by integrating evidence-based care, leadership, and systems-level thinking. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2004) issued its position statement supporting the DNP as the entry-level terminal degree for advanced practice, arguing that it strengthens nursing’s ability to meet increasingly complex patient and system needs. Thus, a key benefit of the DNP is that it enhances the credibility of advanced practice nurses (APRNs) while equipping them with leadership and policy skills beyond the master’s level (DeNisco, 2024). However, there are also drawbacks to positioning the DNP as the required terminal degree. Canady (2021) highlights that some nurses view the DNP as less research-focused than the PhD, raising concerns about fragmentation in nursing scholarship and the development of future faculty. Additionally, questions remain about whether mandating the DNP might limit the pipeline of APRNs due to added cost and length of study (Dobrowolska et al., 2021). While the DNP provides advanced clinical preparation, it may unintentionally widen the gap between academic and practice pathways if not clearly distinguished from the PhD (Canady, 2021). In conclusion, the DNP offers clear advantages by elevating advanced clinical practice and aligning nursing with other health professions that require doctoral preparation. Yet, challenges related to cost, role clarity, and research capacity remain. Ongoing evaluation of outcomes is essential to ensure that the DNP strengthens advanced nursing practice without diminishing the discipline’s scholarly foundation (DeNisco, 2024; Canady, 2021).
