Elderly individuals most often wish to peacefully pass away in their own homes, but the advancements in health care technology have greatly affected the trend in palliative care nowadays. A lot of issues arise especially in deciding whether to respect the wishes of the elderly patients or to intervene and provide palliative or hospice care. In this delicate situation, the nurses are highly involved and can greatly impact the quality of life and wellbeing of elderly patients (Selman, et al., 2017).
There are a lot of challenges that elderly patients face during their dying moments. Some of these include depression, pain, and loss of function. An advanced directive is also promoted to clarify the wishes of the patient, which will aid in clarifying the preferences of the patient with the help of lawyers (Hebert, et al., 2011). There are cultural differences for each patient and their families, which becomes a challenge that hospice nurses also need to recognize to provide holistic and appropriate needs of the patient.
