Over the years, ulcerative colitis (UC) has continued to be a common issue affecting a significant population worldwide. The annual incidence ranges between 10 and 12 people in a group of 100000 people. When a person has this disorder, the immune system assumes that the cells lining the colon are responsible for the attack. As a result, rather than safeguarding it, the white blood cells destroy the colon's lining. This paper analyzes various dietary prescriptions for a patient with UC, nursing diagnosis, short and long-term goals, nursing interventions, evaluation statements, and teaching considerations for the patients.
While there is no cure for UC, eating the right meal can help to live with the symptoms and be aware of avoiding foods that can trigger their symptoms. One of the important foods a patient should consume is foods rich in low fiber diet. Being vital is because these foods are easily digestible (Santos-Longhurst, 2022). These foods also assist in slowing bowel movements and reducing diarrhea. Some foods with low fiber include milk, pudding, cottage cheese, pasta, dry cereals, and refined white bread. Furthermore, a patient can benefit from certain carbohydrate-rich foods. These diets help to address gastrointestinal (GI) complications (Santos-Longhurst, 2022). Moreover, paleo diets are effective and essential. Some of the foods you can consume include vegetables and fruits. Consuming these types of diets is vital in helping a patient cope with UC in the long term.
To diagnose UC, a healthcare provider asks about the patient’s visible symptoms, medical history, and overall health. Afterward, the providers then conduct a physical examination to confirm the presence of symptoms, including paleness resulting from anemia and tenderness that occur from inflammation (NHS, 2022). Furthermore, the doctor performs a blood test to confirm the presence of anemia and if the patient has any underlying inflammation (NHS, 2022).
