Physical assessment among school-aged children between 5-12 years reveals that children in this age bracket tend to feel mature because they begin to understand and appreciate reality. These children can think logically and comprehend an action's effect. They have more advanced reasoning due to their interactions with other people. Age 5-12 is also the time a child is keen to complete tasks, learn new things, and feel appreciated. However, their behaviors and actions vary from age to age. For instance, a five-year-old child is more attached to the parent or caregiver and would want to move around with the caregiver (Groh et al., 2017). However, a twelve-year-old has already established a relationship with friends and would spend a lot of time playing with them in the absence of the parent.
Techniques used in the assessment include observation and interview, where the caregiver interacts with the child and draws a conclusion based on the child's behaviors. These techniques are applicable in this developmental stage because children can give an accurate account of their conditions (Lourenço, 2017). Modifying the interview technique would involve reading out the interview questions on a standardized test for a five-year-old child and writing answers for them. The same approach would apply to a twelve-year-old to enable them to read, understand and answer the test questions with minimum help. For observation, the modification would involve examining the child thoroughly due to their ability to cooperate fully during the process.
