The selected theme is: - critical thinking of College of Nurses (CNO) standard; it entails critical thinking into nursing practice to inform decision making in professional practice. In the morning, after breakfast, I asked Psw if there is anything I can help. She pointed at a client who wanted to go back to her room. The nurse added that the patient uses the walker and I can walk with her. The Psw and I got the client up and I walked with her to her room. At that moment, I was just thinking that I needed to bring her to her room. I never asked which her weak side is – this is wrong. I should have asked since I have to stand on her weak side while walking.
I reflect on: Before I get the patient up, I should ask her which side is her weak side since I have to support the weak side of the client all the time when I am walking with the patient. In the event that she falls, I can hold her weak side, and she can use her strong arm to grab her walker or bar. It is not only a task; I need to doublethink about it before doing anything, and find the best way to provide caring to the client. In addition, it is also a safety issue.
What influenced the experience is the fact that during that very moment, I was just thinking that all I had to do was help the client to get back to her room, that is, I needed to bring her to her room. Moreover, the psw had informed me that the patient was independent and uses a walker to walk, thus I did not doublethink about it – about asking the patient’s weak side so that I can stand on that side. This is wrong in the sense that even if the patient is independent, she still has a risk of falling and I need to be on the patient’s weak side to support her.
What was positive about the experience is that I assisted the client back to her room, although slowly, and she thanked me for helping her. However, the negative thing about the experience is that I did not support the patient’s weak side as I helped her back to her room. At some point as we walked, she lost her footing and nearly fell down. If I were on her weak side this would not have happened. What I found interesting about the experience is that it is important to communicate with the patient in order to...
