The Approach to Care of Cancer
According to Corner and Bailey (2008), cancer is a group of diseases that involve unregulated or uncontrolled cell growth. This uncontrollable aspect of growth and cell division leads to the formation of tumors that cause the invasion of the nearby body parts. The disease is then spread even to the rest of the body parts through the bloodstream and lymphatic system. However, not every tumor is cancerous, as benign tumors do not invade the neighboring body tissues or rather do not spread to the other parts of the body.
Cancer is caused by complex, diverse, and partially understood conditions that make its diagnosis hard to treat (Pinheiro & Sherman, 2009). However, there are different actions or norms that increase the risks of cancer including dietary factors, use of tobacco, obesity, radiation exposures, infections, as well as the environmental pollutants. However, this essay aims at describing the approach to care of cancer. The descriptions include the staging and diagnosis of cancer, the complications of the side effects of cancer treatments, and the best methods to reduce the physical and psychological effects.
Various aspects are helpful towards the prevention of cancer. Such include conducting physical exercises, eating less refined meat and meals, eating more fruits, vegetables, and grains, not smoking, reduce sunlight exposure (Ferguson, 2010). Maintaining a good healthy weight and receiving vaccinations for infectious diseases are also some efforts of cancer prevention.
In identifying cancer, it can be detected through various ways including the indication of certain symptoms, signs, medical imaging, or screening tests. One the cancer is detected, a sample of body tissue is diagnosed by the use of microscopic examination. The microscopic is the study of microscopic anatomies of tissues and cells from animal and plant body parts (Crawford, 2003). The examination is done through an electron microscope or light microscope. The examination is the important tool that helps in diagnosing the diseased tissues or cells, thereby providing the accurate information of availability of cancer and other infectious diseases.
The cancer is treated using surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. However, the survivals of the disease vary on the location and the type of cancer, as well as severity of disease at the initial stages of treatment. Even though the cancer affects everyone in terms of age, some of its types are common to young children but the risks continue to develop with the increase of age. Fortunately, the early detection of cancer is extremely important since it allows the early treatment that assists in its process. According to Lee (2010), various studies have evidently concluded that the risks of acquiring cancer increases with the increase of ages for an individual. The advancement of age continues to increase fear, especially due to the increasing competition of causes of death, increased risks of toxicities, and limitation of life expectancy. Therefore, understanding the progression nature of cancer is important in contemplating or articulation the approach to use for treatment or accessible for the patients
However, the cancer diagnosis is the process by which a physician or a care specialist is determined to identify the presence of the disease through observing symptoms or screening. The monitoring and screening of cancerous symptoms does not necessitate the physician to examine the samples of the body tissues or cells (Parker, 2004). There is a need for medical tests to be conducted to diagnose the suspected presence of cancer in the patient’s body. Such medical tests include the commonly used ultrasound, blood tests, CT scans, X-rays, and endoscopy.
The physician also needs to avoid the effects that may be caused by the causes of having cancer. As discussed earlier, cancer can be inherited or trigged by its exposure to toxic or chemical compounds such as tobacco smoking, asbestos, or radiation. The diagnosis of cancer completely affects individual people and their families to the rest of their lives. Some people become distressed after learning to have cancer (Pinheiro & Sherman, 2009). This causes the victimized person to become depressed and anxious, which are associated to other negative actions such as suicidal risks.
However, the early diagnosis or treatment of cancer cures the disease completely, especially at its...
