Teams are vital to accomplishing a wide array of organizational objectives. This realization has made most managers to start putting teams in place as a way of responding to the emerging challenges in organizations. Ideally, teams can be found at every stage of the organization and if well managed are vital to attaining the objectives that a leader could be having for the organization. Leading teams requires certain characteristics and structure that have to be put in place. Without these traits and structures, a team cannot be functional and as for that reason the leader will be unable to achieve the objectives that he has set out to attain.
One of the most important things to consider before setting up teams is ascertaining the function that the team will fulfill. Even before taking into consideration the interpersonal dynamics that will be taking place between the team members, it is important to first take into consideration the activities that the team will be performing as this helps in putting the team into perspective. Without having a clear path on how to coordinate the team, there would be a big challenge as the team would obviously lack direction and therefore fail at an early stage (Bazerman, 2002).
While teams are likely to succeed if there is already a well defined path to follow, the executive plays a very critical role towards the success of the team. For a team to be successful at its work there is need for support both in terms of morale and resources. Without moral and resource support from the executive, the team will most likely not be able to complete its tasks in a timely manner. Resource does not necessarily refer to money as it also involves an access to information and data forecasts (Bazerman, 2002).
