Disruptive technologies have become can be compared to missiles that are directed to businesses by external forces. The manner in which the business responds to these forces determines the lifespan of the business in the market. Indap (2016) defines disruptive technology as one that shakes the existing technology, replaces it, and threatens to face out firms that solely depended on that technology. Every technology will face disruption as innovation continues to improve the experience of clients who are always developing an insatiable appetite for the latest technologies. International Business Machines (IBM) is an example of a technological company that has struggled and survived through different interruptive technologies. This paper discusses disruptive technologies at IBM Company and how it is responding to technological changes.
Company Description and the Disruption Technology it faces
IBM is a global technology company headquartered in New York. The company was founded in 1911 by Ranlett Flint. Currently, IBL employs more than four hundred thousand employees directly and millions of others indirectly through its innovative technologies and collaboration with other firms through partnerships. IBM operated and runs different lines of businesses and innovations which include the automated teller machines (ATMs), computer microchips, computer hardware, software, and hosting services for other businesses. The Company is also America’s leading research firm that leverages data for other businesses and helps provide reliable data for business decisions.
The main challenge facing IBM today is the technological innovation. Since the technological revolution of the 1990s, IBM remained the leader of the technological world by patenting most of its earlier technologies and manufacturing and selling computer-based hardware. IBM remained the leader of the industry until the early 2000s when new entrants developed an interest in the innovative technology. The company significant challenges as it strived to remain competitive even as new companies such as Apple and Microsoft became its direct competitor. The problem with the competitors is that they came with relatively cheaper and quality products that consumers could hardly resist. IBM had to research the market and make an informed decision that could lead to its growth while at the same time ensuring that it safeguards the interests of its stakeholders including employees and shareholders.
The Degree of Disruptive Technology on IBM
IDM suffered a significant blow on every aspect of its operations due to technological changes that emerged from the computer and internet revolution. Initially, IBM had controlled the market by selling computer hard drives and microchips to other companies. IBM computers were also used in every business in the 1990s until late 2000 when other companies such as Hewlett Packard (HP), Apple Computers, and Samsung disrupted the old technologies. IBM had specialized in desktop computers, which were relatively large. The oncoming of small-sized computer laptops with increased storage capacities challenged IBM’s market share.
Additionally, the revolution of cell phones that came in the 2000s market was a blow for IBM as people started using their devices to download and store music from web platforms. People no longer prefer desktop computers as they are no longer portable.
Additionally, people no longer buy discs for storing music as they can download videos from online and store them in their mobile devices. The new entrants like Microsoft, Apple Inc., and Samsung also came with their new technologies of manufacturing and selling their software and hardware to third-party clients. IBM had to device a way of responding to these threats.
