The purpose of this assignment is to help you get accustomed to identifying the various parts of a research study. In general, the best way to approach the assignment is to read the article through rather rapidly in order to get an impression of its general content; then read it more slowly and make appropriate notes so you can complete the assignment as directed below. The study aimed at showing the effects of a combination of internet based cognitive behavioral therapy and electronically served support among peers on improved mental health among former combatants.
Participants
It enrolled 50 veterans that participated in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Twenty six percent were from the ethnic minorities. Only ten percent of the participants were female, only 34 percent income was more than $30,000 per annum and only 12 percent had previously undertaken treatment for depression. Type of study
The study used both qualitative data and quantitative data to analyze the effects of an internet centered intervention for improved mental health among fifty former combatants. It drew quantitative data from the statistical analysis of lessons through questionnaires conducted based on the gender and income categories (Van Voorhees, Gollan, & Fogel, 2012). Qualitative data was drawn from research on the efficacy of the cognitive behavior therapy and support among peers as guided by the social worker. It relied on the reported information about its benefits as it relates to ameliorating mental health symptoms such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (Van Voorhees, Gollan, & Fogel, 2012).
Hypothesis
The hypothesis was that internet centered cognitive behavior therapy and electronic support among peers drastically improves mental health for those involved in combat. It also eases the stigma related to seeking mental health help and improves their functional abilities (Van Voorhees, Gollan, & Fogel, 2012).
Procedure or method
The study measured the effects using a phase one clinical attempt on fifty former combatants that participated in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They trials measured posttraumatic stress disorder and other anxiety related mental health conditions such as depression and they measured their ability to undertake basic functions. The time frame for the clinical trials of the first phase was twelve weeks and they measured the former combatants’ attitudes at the fourth, eight and twelfth week respectively. The procedure did not a control group and relied on qualitative data from research on efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy and support among support in ameliorating mental diseases (Van Voorhees, Gollan, & Fogel, 2012).
Statistical tests
Statistical analysis addressed both categorical and continuous measures using t-tests and McNemar respectively (Van Voorhees, Gollan, & Fogel, 2012). The t-test works best to compare the relationship between two variables (Lowry, 2013).
