This is a skin condition that can affect the whole body and affects around two percent worldwide. It is more common in Scandinavians and Caucasians, with eleven percent predisposition, while Asians and Africans only have a two percent chance of getting the disease (Rendon & Schäkel, 2019).
Pathophysiology
Keratinocytes are the cells that can be found in most parts of the epidermis, which is the topmost layer of our skin. In psoriasis, an initial insult that causes damage to the skin triggers an inflammatory response. The patient’s immune system cannot distinguish between a normal and abnormal process. It attacks all the body system’s processes, specifically the production and proliferation of the keratinocytes, regardless of its condition. Hence it is called an autoimmune condition.
