The influence of nurse managers in shaping the work environment that is healthy is undisputable. Among all the roles of leadership, the nurse manager has the most direct influence and impact on healthcare needs and services that patients and families require during their health care experience. We have an extensive role impacting the achievement of a professional culture that recruits and retains expert nurses (Middleton, 2011).
Professional regulation in nursing practice and the legal requirements require that I exercise accountability and responsibility for my nursing practice. Accountability requires a nurse to be willing and able to accept the responsibility of one’s actions and accept the consequences of such behavior. Throughout my nursing practice, I have gained trust from the hospital board for institutions I have work for do to my inherent nature of accountability. I ensure that I am accountable for my own personal behavior, actions, and consequences and this has been transferred to my professional practice in nursing that has enabled me to rise the ranks to a nurse manager.
To me professional development is a continuous process. From personal research, I have realized that most nurses work for 35-40 years indicating the importance for any nurse to develop a career plan to improve their nursing skills. To improve my skills, I have attended seminars; I am part of the country’s nursing association, and part of the nursing committee. However, I have not yet managed to advance my career in terms of enrolling for a higher degree program and remained as an undergraduate degree nurse.
In regards to personal journey discipline, I have weaknesses of setting up many future plans that are not time bound and want to achieve them all at the same time. However, once I take up a certain task or goal in my practice, I follow it through to its completion in the most effective and efficient manner. Finally, although I sometimes do not take criticisms positively at the moment they are given, I always examine what actions in my behavior that led to such criticism (reflection-in-action) and how look at how I handled similar criticism or situations in the past (reflection-on-action). This allows me to improve myself as a nurse and my nursing practice.
