In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in collaboration with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) launched a two-year campaign to address the need to assess and transform the nursing and the entire medical fraternity. Once compiled, the report was going to act as a blueprint for the actions and steps towards a brighter and better nursing profession. It explored how the roles, responsibilities, and education of nurses would change significantly to meet the demands of their profession. This paper critically examines the importance of the report in nursing and the challenges experienced during the implementation. The final section will give some recommendations on how this process could be bettered.
The report gave several recommendations facing the future of nursing. Its overall conclusion was grasped in four key messages. The messages revolve on the importance of utilizing their skills to the entirety, professional and academic improvement, collaboration and proper collection and handling of the information (Grossman, 2013). This may involve professional advancement, academic education, or certification (Grossman and Valiga, 2009). For the second time, the report calls nurses to partake in the ever growing and complex American Healthcare system. It urges nurses to take leadership roles in the health care system, as this will greatly improve patient care. Noting that nursing makes the single largest department in the healthcare workforce, nurses have valuable insights and capacities to improve the system.
The success of the healthcare will not be based on the disease process, but on diseases prevention and the promotion of people’s health (Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, IOM 2011). This inescapable statement leads to the conclusion that nurses and the systems preparing them must think about nursing beyond the hospital setting.
The report also recommends th...
