Discovery of Magnesium
The periodic table comprises elements that are critical in life and industry. Of these, it is magnesium that is so chemically and biologically special. This paper looks at the discovery, characteristics, and uses of this element. Mg, magnesium, is a critical element that is useful in most industrial and biological phenomena. Its discovery is attributed to Joseph Black in 1755, who identified the difference between calcium compounds and magnesium (Greenwood & Earnshaw, 2012). Later, Sir Humphry Davy was in a position to isolate magnesium in 1808 through electrolysis of magnesia and mercury oxide. This finding has led to extensive use of magnesium in the contemporary scientific and technological world.
