The structure of DNA, with its well-known double helix, is due to a synergetic combination of intermolecular forces, each contributing in its own way to the stability of the DNA structure and its functionality. None of these forces is more important than hydrogen bonding, which occurs between the nitrogenous bases of the two strands. The respective pairing is between adenine (A) and thymine (T) by two hydrogen bondings and guanine (G) and cytosine (C) by three hydrogen bondings. These hydrogen bonds- namely, N–H•••O and N–H•••N— are specific and directional, which allows proper base pairing and hence the correct replication and transcription of genetic material (Guinn, 2020).
